World’s Greatest Hobby Campaign Keeps Model Railroading on the Right Track for the Future

Launched in 2001, the World’s Greatest Hobby is an advertising and public relations initiative designed to advance model railroading as a pastime. The campaign’s central mission focuses on raising public awareness and educating people about the satisfactions that come with the hobby.

The initiative has garnered substantial backing from numerous industry players, including manufacturers Atlas Model Railroad Co., Bachmann Industries, Caboose Industries, Digitrax, Kalmbach Media, Kato USA, and Wm. K. Walthers, Inc.

Support spans the entire model railroading sector — from large manufacturers to individual enthusiasts. The program relies on volunteer participation, with more than 1,100 model railroaders serving as Ambassadors who present to community groups. Presentations feature a video with actor Michael Gross, an enthusiast himself. Additionally, 1,099 clubs and 721 retailers have pledged their support.

Terry Thompson, Model Railroader magazine editor, noted: “There has been a surge of interest in model railroading in recent years, and as an industry we want to help build that momentum.” He explained that Baby Boomers with increased leisure time and discretionary spending seek fulfilling hobbies, and model railroading appeals to them by combining nostalgia with intellectual challenge.

The campaign distributes educational materials, coordinates grassroots efforts, and maintains www.greatesthobby.com with beginner resources and guidance.
