Why Benchwork Matters
Your benchwork is the foundation of everything. A solid, level framework prevents track problems, supports scenery weight, and lasts for decades. Spending time here saves headaches later.
L-Girder Construction
L-girder benchwork uses an L-shaped beam (a 1×4 with a 1×2 glued to its edge) supported by legs. Cross-members called joists sit on top of the girders, and risers on the joists support your sub-roadbed. It is flexible, strong, and easy to modify.
Open-Grid Construction
Open-grid uses a rectangular frame of 1×4 lumber with cross-members. It is simpler to build than L-girder and works well for rectangular layouts. The open structure lets you add scenery below track level easily.
Materials
- Lumber — Select straight, kiln-dried 1×4 and 1×3 boards. Avoid warped or green lumber.
- Screws — Use #8 × 1-5/8″ drywall screws for most joints. They hold better than nails and allow disassembly.
- Glue — Yellow wood glue (like Titebond) strengthens every joint.
Key Tips
Always check for level as you build. A torpedo level on every cross-member saves you from chasing phantom derailment problems later.
Set your benchwork height at a comfortable viewing level — typically 40 to 48 inches from the floor for standing operation.
