Start With the Basics
You do not need a workshop full of expensive tools to get started in model railroading. A handful of quality basics will take you a long way. Here is what we recommend for every beginner.
Cutting and Shaping
- Hobby knife — An X-Acto #1 handle with #11 blades is essential for trimming parts, cutting styrene, and general detail work.
- Sprue cutters — Flush-cut nippers make clean cuts when removing parts from sprues.
- Needle files — A small set of needle files helps smooth rough edges and fit parts together.
Adhesives
- Plastic cement — Tamiya Extra Thin or Testors liquid cement works great for styrene-to-styrene bonds.
- CA (super glue) — Medium viscosity CA handles most metal-to-plastic and wood joints.
- White glue — Regular PVA glue (like Elmer’s) is perfect for ballasting track and attaching ground cover.
Measuring and Marking
- Scale ruler — A ruler with your scale’s markings converts real-world dimensions instantly.
- Pencils and fine-tip markers — For marking cut lines on wood, foam, and styrene.
Electrical
- Soldering iron — A 25-40 watt iron with a fine tip handles track feeders and decoder installs.
- Wire strippers — Essential for DCC wiring projects.
- Multimeter — Invaluable for troubleshooting shorts and verifying voltage.
